Draper Temple Open House

Yesterday our family was able to go to the Draper Temple Open House. I loved showing my children the temple. And they were so well-behaved! (as told to me by the lady behind me in line)
If you haven't been yet, it is well worth it.
Here is a link for more pictures of the temple plus open house info:

First we parked at a nearby chapel to wait our turn for the shuttle bus to the temple. It was hard to sit still for nearly everyone. When we finally made it to the temple, it was interesting to observe the kids as we walked from room to room. Miriam led the way, too excited to wait for anyone else. I carried Olivia who was awake for most of it. She flashed her beautiful open-mouth smile to almost every staff member we passed. Emily walked next to me, and Michael held each of the boys' hands. Adam was careful and SLOW, but Joshua wanted to be fast. So Michael had a tug-of-war with one boy at the end of each of his arms.

The feeling inside the temple was so beautiful and peaceful. You can really feel that it is the House of the Lord. I loved seeing my children around me in the temple. I loved observing other parents, like us, bend down to whisper in their children's ears as they paused during the tour. I loved sitting in the sealing room at the very end with Michael and all our kids sitting next to us. It was a spiritual experience with my kids I will treasure.

This last picture is in the church adjacent to the temple where we enjoyed cookies after the tour.

Olivia Bee

Where did this gate come from?
Why can't I move it?

The top of the stairs is my new favorite place to play.

Refried beans! Yummy! Someone left the pot too close and I helped myself.

And introducing...

the newest cast member of the teletubbies...
Bee!
(complete with fan club!)

Not really. but to my mom, I look like a teletubby in this thing.

When it rains...

Yesterday was laundry day. I say "was" because my old washer (bought from friends 10 years ago, who purchased it refurbished years before that) stopped working mid-cycle. And I was stuck with about 10 loads of laundry (no exaggeration!) left to do plus a FULL washer that wouldn't drain. HELP!

When the washer stopped, it wasn't a quiet death. There were grinding sounds, plus burning smells. There may have been a way to drain the water, but neither Michael or I could figure it out. So, I pulled out the clothes which still had to be rinsed and rung out before heading to the dryer. Michael found a piece of sprinkler pipe that had never been used (lucky him) to use for a syphon to empty the extra large load of water. I never knew how many gallons of water it takes to wash clothes until we had to empty it with buckets. As Michael syphoned the water into a Rubbermaid tub, I used a 3 gallon bucket to get the water to the sink. I must have made at least 7 trips, plus, there was at least 6 gallons in the tub that Michael dumped. That much water was left AFTER I pulled out the dripping clothes! So, let's estimate 30 gallons. Imagine the mess if the water had leaked from the washer, out of the laundry room, and all over my laminate flooring in the kitchen (and then through the floor to the basement...). Let's not think about it.

Good news!!!! We were able to find another washer on ksl.com classified ads. It is used, but works fine and for only $70. It isn't the fancy front loading machine I dream of some day, but it will work. Michael had to go pick it up, but he was able to make it back home in time to help put the kids to bed.

Removing the old washer (now empty) wasn't bad. Neither was getting the new washing machine into place. After all, Michael only let me watch. :) After hooking up the hoses, we started an empty load to make sure it worked before loading in clothes. The water filled and the agitator spun.

As Michael went out to the garage to try to reorganize things and make room for the broken washer AND the van, I checked on my new machine again. As the washer switched from washing to draining, I heard a pop and (you guessed it) a loud crash of water. Pushing the knob in on the machine to attempt to stop the flow didn't do anything. The drainage hose had popped off and all the water in the machine was being emptied onto the floor of my laundry room. What would you do? I yelled for Michael and grabbed a blanket and my basket of clean towels to "catch" the flood. Anything to keep the water off the wood floor to avoid warping, and away from the crack in the floor of the laundry room to keep the water upstairs was our goal. One huge queen size flannel blanket, and at least 10 towels later, the washer was emptied and flood contained. Great. I only have 13 loads of laundry to do now. (we managed to save the floor and haven't seen evidence of leaking through to downstairs ceiling as of yet. hope it didn't.) It was so bad, it was comical.

My laundry room floor with towels and blanket to soak up spill. Look closely and you can see standing water between the towels and the washer.

Michael fixed the drain hose and it has been fine since. (Did I mention this is the one year anniversary of the death of my old dryer?)

I'm afraid to use the extra large load setting now. :) After all what would I do with another 30 gallons of water on the floor? I might NOT have baskets of unfolded laundry just waiting for such an occasion to help soak it all up. :) Probably not. It's an endless battle to keep up. I'm sure I will ALWAYS have baskets I haven't folded yet if such an opportunity presents itself.
Happy Laundry day!

Sealings...

Last weekend was all about my nephew, Jared!  His adoption was finalized this month and my sister and her husband couldn't be happier!

On January 17th, we were able to join Jared and his parents (Lori and Amaleki) at the Vernal Temple where they were sealed as a family.  We are so happy for them and thank them for the opportunity to share in their day.

On January 18th, we were able to be with them in Sacrament meeting as Amaleki gave Jared a name and blessing.  It was a very special experience.  Doesn't Jared look handsome in his white clothing?  (thanks for the pictures, Lori and Dad!)

I think the best part of the whole weekend was that all of my parents children, spouses, and grandchildren were able to be there.  We haven't all been to my parent's house at the same time for a long time.  Here is our group picture.

The weekend before that we drove with the kids to Denver for Michael's nephew's wedding.  Yes, we drove.  The minivan.  And 4 out of 5 children sit in a carseat.  Every seat is filled.  I'll just sum up the drive by saying it was crowded, and long.  I would be happy NOT to take any long rides with the kids for a while.  After all, we did it two weeks in a row!  I must say though, the family members we were able to be with when we reached our destinations were wonderful.  I didn't get to take many pictures of us there, and those I did take are missing from my camera. So sad. :(  but it was fun seeing Michael's parents, and siblings, and their spouses, and all the cousins.

I think my favorite part of that trip was during the wedding reception.  Michael asked Miriam to dance and led her to the dance floor.  Miriam absolutely loved it!  It was so fun to see how she loved dancing with her dad.  Emily refused to dance with her dad, but loved watching Miriam.  Miriam even danced with Olivia which scared some other women who were watching and didn't realize Michael was standing by to "catch" the baby if needed.  Sure wish I had the camera then.

I love this picture of Olivia asleep on her Dad.  Just before I took it, I asked Michael to smile and look like he likes Olivia.  (because he usually hates pictures and frowns in them)  I told him when Olivia sees this picture when she grows up, he won't want her to think he doesn't like her.  Michael was a good sport.  :)

snow and crawling

It has been snowing a lot at our house.  Most of this snow came the week of Christmas.  Since it has been snowing all day, I thought I would put some pictures of the girls playing (they stopped to pose) in the snow so you can see just how much we have!

This is Emily in the front yard with snow up to her knees.

Miriam wanted her picture taken sitting in this snow chair she made.  (I'm standing just inside our front door in socks and don't want to get wet.  It is still snowing.

Olivia has learned to crawl anywhere she wants to go, and she is really fast. (she turns 8-months old tomorrow!) She still doesn't pick up her tummy and her army crawling is very cute. Her two goals while in the floor are to crawl into the middle of the boys' train track to derail the moving train, and eat all the paper she can find on the floor.

In this picture, I had just put Olivia in the living room and blocked the door to keep her there while I cleaned in the kitchen. Olivia couldn't go around the barricade, so she went THROUGH the barricade! I'll have to find a better way to block her in next time.
