Doll Clothes

The girls finished their doll clothes yesterday afternoon.  We made up the simple pattern.  There are no zippers, buttons, or fasteners.  Just a pull on dress that fits over the head.  It started as simple square for the bodice, with a square cut out for the head.  Folded in half, and stitched half way down at the sides made sleeves.  We modified two opposite sides of the square to make a better sleeve shape.  Then we cut a long rectange for the skirt and gathered the long side and sewed it to the bodice.  The girls picked their own fabric scraps from my box, cut out pattern pieces, and helped me pin.

Emily and Miriam did most of the sewing on my sewing machine.  They did better than I expected.  It was really hard not to help guide the fabric.  They each sewed the whole bodice by themselves.  Emily worried more about her speed of sewing than if she was stitching strait.  Miriam had two speeds which were fast as you can, and stop.  She expected me to remove pins.  It was a learning moment for us all. They got bored when we were in the middle of making the gathers for the skirt, so I stitched that seam.  Since we made the dolls, they have taken them everywhere they go at home.  It's their new favorite toy.  Now they have clothes for them too.  They dressed their dolls and I haven't seen them without clothes since.  (unlike the naked barbie collection)
